Knowing about Oral Cancer

April 27, 2015

Close to 45,750 patients will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year.  Oral cancer is often not detected until it has metastasized to other areas of the body such as the lymph nodes of the neck.  Oral cancer diagnosis continues to rely on patient presentation and physical examination with a biopsy for confirmation if detected.

Risk factors include any person with a history of tobacco and alcohol use have a significant risk of developing an oral head or neck cancer, however, 1 in 4 head an neck cancers are detected in patients who do not smoke or drink alcohol.

Make sure your dental professional is checking your oral tissue at each of your hygiene visits!  Dr. Judd and his amazing hygienists have excelled in preventative services as we have a special light called the Oral ID which detects abnormal tissue cells.
